The placer tin deposits in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are suitable for gravity separation, but they must be washed clean first due to their high mud content.
After long-term weathering, cassiterite in this type of placer tin ore has long fallen out of the stones. Moreover, cassiterite is much heavier than ordinary sandstone, and it can be easily separated by washing with water.
The processing flow is divided into four steps:
First, ore washing and desliming: The raw ore is full of clay clumps and grass roots. It easily turns into a paste when exposed to water, so the clay clumps must be broken up and impurities sieved out first.
Jig roughing: Feed in qualified small particles. Use water flow to sink the heavy cassiterite to the bottom, first shaking off most of the useless sand and gravel.
Tabletop selection: The semi-finished products from jigging still contain impurities. The tabletop can precisely stratify and purify the tin concentrate powder.
This method doesn’t require complex chemicals, and the equipment is inexpensive and easy to repair. If the mine also contains associated precious metals such as tantalum and niobium, they can be conveniently recovered as well.
